He was born in Milan, Ohio in 1847, and he received little formal education.
At the age of 12, he became an apprentice to a local newspaper and learned the printing trade.Edison began inventing at an early age, and he received his first patent, for an electric vote recorder, in 1869. He later moved to Menlo Park, New Jersey, where he established a laboratory and workshop that became known as the "invention factory."
At Menlo Park, Edison and his team of researchers and technicians worked on a variety of projects, including the development of the phonograph, the first device to record and play back sound.In addition to his work on the phonograph, Edison is also known for developing the incandescent light bulb, which revolutionized lighting and changed the way people lived and worked.
He also developed the electric power distribution system, which made it possible to transmit electricity over long distances and brought electricity to homes and businesses.
Edison was a prolific inventor, and he received more than 1,000 patents during his lifetime. He was also a successful businessman, and he formed several companies to manufacture and sell his inventions. He died in West Orange, New Jersey in 1931 at the age of 84.
